Farmers tackling climate change:Â systemic solutions for greater mitigation and adaptation of EU’s agriculture sector

The final SOLMACC conference brought together the wide array of actors that have been involved in the project in the last five years, such as the farmers and advisors working on implementing climate-friendly practices and scientists monitoring the practices, and external policy experts to discuss ways forward through policy support. To this end, the event’s speakers and participants 1/Presented the final results of the SOLMACC project;Â 2/Highlighted the willingness of organic farmers to be part of the solution for fighting climate change by showcasing the results and impact of farmers involved in the SOLMACC project;Â 3/Discussed systemic solutions for the agriculture sector to achieve EUâs mitigation and adaptation goals, with a focus on the CAP.

An event presenting SOLMACC will take place at BIOFACH 2018 on Thursday, 15 February from 10.00-10.45 in the Shanghai Room. The speakers Eric Gall (IFOAM EU), Lin Bautze (FiBL DE) and Ralf Mack (Bioland e.V.) will discuss the role of organic farming in the fight against climate change and specific farming practices that can provide both environmental and socio-economic benefits. The event draws on the experience of the SOLMACC project, presenting the results from the scientific monitoring that was done at the farms.

Praxisforschung fĂŒr Klimaschutz im Ăkolandbau

Landwirtschaft kann und sollte aktiver Klimaschutz sein. Insbesondere der ökologische Landbau hat hier ein groĂes Potential. Zwei Forschungsprojekte (darunter SOLMACC) zeigten, wie Wissenschaft und Praxis gemeinsam praktikable Lösungen erarbeiten, um dieses Potential zu heben. Wie kann der ökologische Landbau klimafreundlicher werden?
Erfahrungen, Ergebnisse, Diskussion ĂŒber das EU-Projekt SOLMACC mit 12 Biobetrieben in 3 LĂ€ndern.
WĂ€hrend des Workshops werden die ersten Ergebnisse und gesammelten Erfahrung des SOLMACC Projektes prĂ€sentiert und gemeinsam diskutiert. Besondere Augenmerke werden auf die Erkenntnisse in den Bereichen HofdĂŒnger, erweiterte Fruchtfolgen, optimierte Bodenbearbeitung und Agroforst als klimafreundliche Landbaumethoden gesetzt. Damit richtet sich der Workshop vor allem an Praktiker und Berater in der Schweiz und im benachbarten Ausland, welche einen klimafreundlichen und âangepassten ökologischen Landbau betreiben oder in der Zukunft betreiben wollen.
Die Veranstaltung wird durch die finanzielle UnterstĂŒtzung von Bio Suisse ermöglicht.

Why Soil matters?: A European perspective

2015 is the UN Year of soil. This year has been the occasion to put the issue of soil back on the political agenda. Many events worldwide have raised concerns about the importance of soil. Now is time to bring the issue back on the European political agenda: Why Soils matter? What can we do at EU level to assure a healthy living soil, basis of our food systems and essential to prevent climate change?
This session will discuss the links between soils, food security and climate, and how this interconnectivity is dealt with at a European level. It will involves high level speakers from the academic world and share practical approaches from field actors, working on the ground to preserve healthy living soils. The event will bring a European perspective to major ongoing global debates, such as the discussion around sustainable food policies and agro-ecology and the upcoming Climate Summit (COP21).
Visit SOLMACC demonstration farm HĂ„nsta ĂstergĂ€rde’s open field day 2/09 to learn about climate friendly farming practices
In this field day, on Wednesday 2 September 2015, we will demonstrate and discuss the climate-friendly practices that are being implemented on the Hansta ĂstergĂ€rde farm, including newly planted alleys of trees, fruit trees and hazelnuts grown together with cereals. The farm also has a well-established system for soil preparation in forestry using pigs as well as smaller trials and research on perennial cereal varieties.
As part of the day we will also have a workshop where we will discuss the development of agroforestry systems in Sweden.

From science to politics: Countering the climate challenge in European Regions – with organic farming
